I went to the midnight showing for Hellboy II with a group of friends last night. First we watched the first movie with someone who hasn’t seen it before.I myself have never really been a fan of Hellboy. I enjoyed the first half of the first movie, and the second half was ok at best.
I was looking forward to Hellboy II, I thought it had the potential to be good. The only problem that kept me from getting excited was the trailers were a little lackluster.
One of the best parts of the film was the very beginning. It laid out the mythology behind the Golden Army, while using Hellboys imagination as the visual representation. It was quite possibly my favorite part of the film. *minor spoiler*Seeing Broom again was a really good touch.*spoiler over*
The one big problem that I have with the start of the movie is that it suffers from Men in Black II Syndrome. MBII Syndrome is where you take a film like Hellboy, then when the sequel gets released four years later with a largely noticeable bigger budget. This is very noticeable at the start of the film, where Abe and Manny are walking through BPRD there is a large array of monsters and SFX that were added just for eye candy. People might not have a problem with this, but to me it makes the movie look vastly different from the first film. Where the sequel doesnt give you the same feeling as the first. It was much like the change between The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded.
One reason to see Hellboy II is because, Guillermo del Toro is an amazing visual director. The monsters, special effects and just the film as a whole just look amazing. The movie is filled with lots of eye candy that is done practically and with visual effects. There will be moments that you will be shocked and awed at how certain sets and creatures look. One scene seems to have 100’s of different creatures on the screen at once.
Hellboy II’s story is very interesting and it does rival the story behind the first. I do have some problems with certain items in the film that really should not have been included in the final cut. Mostly Abe and Hellboy getting drunk and singing love songs to each other. I had a laugh, but it really stopped the flow of the movie and it just seemed like a time filler.
The character development for Prince Nuada was nearly non-existent and he has about 15 minutes of actual screen time during the entire film. The first film did a great job of making us fear Rasputin and his minions, this one does not. The film mostly centers around Hellboy and how he wonders whether or not he should care about protecting the Human race.
The new addition to the BPRD, Johann Kraus is by far the coolest character to team up with Hellboy. If they made a movie soley about him I would rather see that instead of Hellboy III(If that happens). If you want to know who he is just read the next minor spoiler. *minor spoiler*Johann Kraus is a ghost who lives inside of a robot body he made himself. He can take over living, mechanical and inanimate objects. He has a very interesting past if you want to read about it on Wikipedia.*spoiler over*
Something I noticed during the film is the only people who can actually do anything is Hellboy and Johann Kraus. Abe and Liz literally just stand and watch during the entire movie and dont really do anything at all. Liz does a few things, but Abe does absolutely nothing at all to help Hellboy during fights.
In my opinion the first Hellboy was fairly boring during the last half of the movie, and in Hellboy II the first half of the movie is a little boring with the second half being very exciting and fun to watch.
I would recommend this movie to anyone looking for a fun movie to watch with friends over the weekend. I will for sure be buying this movie when it comes out on DVD this holiday season.
So in a nutshell…
The story falls flat during certain parts, while sometimes the story will have you on the edge of your seat. The main villain of the movie doesn’t have the same evil shroud that Rasputin had. The final 20 minutes of the film are the most interesting. Abe and Liz just sit out most during most of the action. Hellboy kicks ass along side Johann Kraus. The Golden Army really is a force not to be f.cked with. I enjoyed the film, but for what I thought it was going to be it could have been better.
My grade is 6/10.
Yes I did nit pick a lot of things, but when you put Del Toro in the director and writer chair, I am looking for a great film.
Sorry if this review sucks ass it might jump around a bit, but you didnt read it anyway.
